John Piper: Why I Invited Rick Warren to the DG Conference

Posted by susanb99 on April 15, 2010

John Piper, the Preaching Pastor at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Minneapolis, MN, has invited Rick Warren of Saddleback Church to speak at Piper’s annual Desiring God Conference to be held in October of this year. This is a very odd coupling, to say the least. Piper is a Calvinist and bas been known for his sound doctrine; Warren has wandered further away from basic biblical teachings and is now a national (international?) poster-boy for progressive, liberal “christianity”.

In this video, Piper tries to answer the question “Why Rick Warren @ the Desiring God 2010 National Conference?”.

Piper was on the phone with Warren and wrote down what Warren says about the Gospel of Jesus Christ:

The Bible is totally inerrant and valuable in every way
Penal substitution is of the essence of the Gospel
God is sovereign and central over all
People are lost; they’re going to hell. I (Warren) am not a universalist; I am an evangelist
The office of women elders and pastors – the Bible says it shouldn’t happen, I’m committed to the Bible, therefore we’re not going to go there.
Repentance – I totally believe in the necessity of repentance and I totally am committed to the call for repentance, though I may not use the word as often as some would want me to.
Emergent Church – I am not emergent

Questions Piper should have asked:

The Bible – Which Bible?
Warren uses The Message written by Eugene Peterson as one of his bibles. The Message is a paraphrase, a man’s liberal interpretation of scripture that doesn’t come close to being God’s Word.

Universalism – If you believe “people are lost and going to hell”, then why don’t you follow Jesus’ command to preach the Gospel?

Repentance – Where is the evidence that repentance is actually part of your overall theology?
See video above, plus many others on youtube.

Piper takes Warren’s words at face value, doesn’t regard any of his errant teachings as red flags. He completely ignores Warren’s blatant waffling on basic Gospel tenants and ignores his inability to present the Gospel to unbelievers.

Rick Warren with Chuck Smith and Greg Laurie (Calvary Chapel)

Posted by susanb99 on August 22, 2009

At Calvary Chapel’s 20-year anniversary Harvest Crusade (8/16/09), Chuck Smith, founder of Calvary Chapel, introduced Rick Warren as “my good friend who pastors Saddleback Church” and asked him to lead in prayer (see transcript of prayer at end of post).

Full video:
http://www.harvest.org/crusades/2009/anaheim/webcast/player.php?id=136

In 2006, Chuck Smith denounced the teachings of Rick Warren. http://www.lighthousetrailsresearch.com/recall.htm

The teachings and positions of Rick Warren have come into conflict with us at Calvary Chapel. Pastor Chuck has directed us to discontinue this product [Purpose Driven Life] effective immediately.

So what has happened behind the scenes in the last 3 years? Apparently, a lot. The fact that Smith can say “my good friend” in public ministry after stating that his good friend’s teachings are in conflict with Smith’s beliefs, is extremely suspicious. I am not a Calvary Chapel member, but I would never trust anyone who does such an obvious spiritual back-flip.

Chuck Smith’s response to a caller on the next day’s Pastor’s Perspective radio show: [K-WAVE.org click on Podcasts, then 8/17/09]

Caller’s (John’s) Question: Should pastors share a platform at an evangelical event with someone who typifies the Emergent Church, a minister?

Smith: [chuckle] That’s difficult, John, because, you know, you might say in a sense that last night I was on the platform with a minister that they say that he is a part of the Emergent Church, that he has, you know, sort of a different emphasis in his ministry, more of a social emphasis on what the church should be doing socially for people rather than the spiritual emphasis, and so I was on the platform with him but, you know, I think that it would be divisive. Now the man, I’m convinced, loves the Lord, has a large church, and is, you know, feels that he is called of God to really deal with the social problems of our world today. Now it could be that God IS calling him to that, but that isn’t why God has called ME to do and so, but I can still look at him as a brother in Christ – he believes that Jesus died for our sins and he just has a different emphsis as far as what he feels should be the priority of the church today..
We were both invited to be there but we were on the platform together, sat next to each other, and he is a brother in Christ, and so I didn’t really have any real problem with sharing, being on the same program together with him.

According to scripture, the spiritual emphasis is everything. There isn’t a secondary “emphasis” that someone can pick and choose to focus on. Warren is apostate and unfortunately Smith won’t call him on it because he doesn’t want to be “divisive”.

Rick Warren’s prayer:

Father, I want to thank You that every person here tonight is here because You wanted them to be here, because You never made a person You didn’t love, You never made a person You didn’t have a purpose for, You never made a person that Jesus didn’t die for. And I ask You tonight every person here will see a clear picture of Jesus, what He can do in their lives. Father, there are people here tonight who are confused. Would You help them realize that Jesus is the Truth. And I’m sure there are many people here tonight that feel guilty and ashamed, maybe about their past. Help them to experience the freedom of forgiveness so they can start over with You, a new life.

Lord, we know that there are probably some people who have a tough week, or a tough month, or a tough life, or maybe they’ve been out of work for six months and they’re feeling discouraged and depressed. I ask You to help them to experience the joy of salvation. Lord, there are other people here who are worried and are anxious and are stressed out about the future and about their job. Help them to discover the peace that passes all understanding.

And Father, tonight all of us who know you and are Your children we pray that there will not be a single person exiting this stadium tonight that doesn’t know You. Thank You that You know everything about us and You still love us. And our prayer is that every one of them here tonight who don’t know You will accept You into their heart. Jesus, only You can make the changes that we want to see in our lives. Only You can restore our loneliness and relieve it and heal our past. Only You can give meaning and purpose and only You can give us a home in heaven.

So Father, I ask that You speak through Greg again tonight as You have every night for 20 years. Speak through him with clarity, with simplicity and with power. Anoint his words so that they’re like arrows piercing our hearts all the way into the furthest seats. We thank You in advance what You’re going to do in lives tonight. In Jesus’ Name, amen.

New York City Leadership Center: Greg Laurie, Rick Warren, Ken Blanchard

Posted by susanb99 on September 16, 2008

Recently Lighthouse Trails reported that Greg Laurie was involved in and sponsoring a leadership event with Rick Warren, Bill Hybels, Ken Blanchard, Bob Buford, etc. Lighthouse Trails has been castigated on various blogs and also by Harvest Crusades (Laurie’s ministry) for spreading “lies”. Well, those “lies” are the bald-face truth.

On this page of the New York City Leadership Center, Greg Laurie is listed as an Event Sponsor (scroll down on the page). The “Spiritual Leadership in the Global City” event is slated for Saturday, September 20th and will “link the core values of The New York Leadership Center to their [event attendees’] personal, ministry and professional goals.” What are the core values of the NYCLC?to see the redemption of our communities through leaders leading together.” Redemption of our communities? Jesus Christ did not die and rise again in order that the communities would be redeemed from sin, but that each person would come to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ through faith and repentance of their sins. The phrase “redemption of our communities” is a buzz-phrase for contemplative spirituality (metaphysics) taught and promoted by Rick Warren’s purpose-driven philosophy and the emergent/emerging church. The emerging church leaders and Rick Warren are prominently included in the NYCLC.

Greg Laurie is smack in the middle of this “leadership” group, lending support and his well-known name to spread the unbiblical, heretical views of the New York City Leadership Center, an inter-faith, one-faith-for-all religion of the future.

Mark Driscoll and Purpose Driven

Posted by susanb99 on April 17, 2008

Rick Warren has scheduled a pastors’ conference at Saddleback Church next month. The aim is to “band together to impact the world” by participating in “a brand-new, world-shattering, myth-busting, ministry-affirming, God-anointed, BY-INVITATION-ONLY event. We’re going to share all the new tools we’ve been developing for you.”

Included in the list of speakers is Mark Driscoll. What is a supposedly Bible-teaching pastor doing at a purpose-driven conference? Teaching the Bible is not one of them. Let’s see, where would Driscoll fit in? (my notes in brackets; emphasis added)

PANEL DISCUSSIONS

Evangelism: …we’ll talk about the importance of personal evangelism, and share what has helped challenge our members to go out in the Community and invite their friends. Let’s talk about reaching out to non-believers in our area and seeing Christ through their eyes.

[preaching/teaching the Gospel is not part of PD’s Evangelism]

Worship: …In this panel we’ll discuss tools for reaching the weekend Crowd, messages geared toward personal application, the advantages of using various venues styles, and preaching for life change…

[non-believers CANNOT worship God; God must be worshipped in spirit and in truth (Jesus Christ)]

Fellowship: …we’ll address common goals and problem areas in encouraging our Congregation to connect with the church body…

[in order to produce a cheerfully tithing “giving unit”]

Discipleship: …we’ll break down what we’ve found to work, and what doesn’t work, in motivating the Committed individuals within the church body to truly invest in their spiritual growth, and brainstorm on how to get people serious about their faith…

[just look to scripture and “what works” is easy to find; Warren likes to make it seem soooo difficult]

Ministry: …we’ll cover how to further push the dedicated Core at the heart of the church to discover their spiritual gifts, how to progress them from finding their S.H.A.P.E. to using it… and preparing them for “works of service so that the body of Christ may be built up”.

[how bogus; the SHAPE program was invented by Warren with the help of the writings of occultist/atheist Carl Jung; it is in no way scriptural]

Mission: …Our goal is to spread love, forgiveness, and hope to a lost and hurting world through P.E.A.C.E…

[the love of the world, forgiveness without repentance, and false hope]

Where does Driscoll fit it? In order to be involved he will have to lay aside scripture and be part of Warren’s plan to change and take over the world. For Christ, supposedly but actually changing the world is for Warren’s benefit and glory. It is sad that Driscoll is mixed up with this lot. Very sad.

Does Rick Warren Have Reservations about the Emerging [Emergent] Church?

Posted by susanb99 on March 27, 2008

From Lighthouse Trails Blog:

The following comment was made by one of Rick Warren’s apologists:

[Rick] Warren has reservations about various aspects of the Emerging Church. This is why he has never fully endorsed everything found within it.

If Rick Warren has reservations about some things in the emerging church, those reservations are not about the mystical components of this movement. Case in point: He has had an ongoing working relationship with mysticism advocate Leonard Sweet for many years, and in fact, invited Sweet to teach at the recent Small Groups Conference at Saddleback. Sweet represents the exact same spirituality as Brian McLaren, Rob Bell, and Doug Pagitt. Sweet represents the epitome of emerging spirituality: mysticism, panentheism, interspirituality, etc… Read More…
