Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away. 2nd Timothy 3:5

S.H.A.P.E. – A Form of Godliness

Posted by susanb99 on November 20, 2007

November 20, 2007 — S.H.A.P.E. is an acrostic created by Rick Warren to train church attenders to be volunteers in the local church and is a requirement of the 301 Ministry Base.

Spiritual gifts

First on the list is Spiritual Gifts. According to scripture, spiritual gifts are given by God; there is no magic process to “having” spiritual gifts – they are gifts of God and cannot be controlled by man. Warren outlines the acrostic on this page, giving his reasoning behind the SHAPE process:

The Bible teaches that God gives every believer certain spiritual gifts to be used in ministry (1 Cor. 12, Rom. 8, Eph. 4).

However, *I* believe spiritual gifts are only one part of the picture. In my opinion, spiritual gifts are often overemphasized to the neglect of other equally important factors. Natural abilities that you were born with also came from God. So do your experiences and inborn personality traits. Your Creator planned these factors as well. (emphasis added)

Where does scripture say that “natural abilities”, “experiences”, and “inborn personality traits” are to be used to edify, encourage, and build up the Body of Christ in addition to spiritual gifts FROM GOD? The Bible does not add those items — Rick Warren does. Obviously, the SHAPE process is only HIS opinion.

The Spiritual Gifts Test that is part of the SHAPE program is based on the Myers-Briggs psychological assessment engineered by Carl Jung, an occult atheist with a demon guide. Rick Warren is aware of these discrepancies that are against the Word of God, but he wants HIS weightless ideas to be used, not the Bible. His very flawed opinion (SHAPE) can be sold; spiritual gifts from God cannot.

Second is Heart. Again, Warren is looking for a factor that can be controlled by man and sold to undiscerning patsies. Spiritual gifts cannot be corralled by anyone but God, therefore, Warren has added his own flavors to the Word of God. He says

Don’t ignore your natural interests. People rarely excel at tasks they don’t enjoy doing. High achievers enjoy what they do.

‘High achievers’ can mean anyone, believers or unbelievers. Using the natural interests of high achievers is found nowhere in the Bible. That concept also ignores what Paul said in 2nd Corinthians 12:9 And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. The grace and strength of Jesus Christ is not good enough for Rick Warren. He has found his “answers” in metaphysics, a new/old spirituality.

Same with the third on the list: Abilities. Warren states

These [natural] abilities should not be wasted. ‘There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord.’ (1 Cor. 12:5).

But 1st Corinthians 12:5 is in reference to spiritual gifts, the ones that GOD gives to believers. One cannot misuse scripture and lackadaisically teach that spiritual gifts are nothing more than natural abilities. At least one can’t do that and call himself a biblical Christian.

Same ole story with the next one, Personality. Now Warren is getting into “temperments”, a Carl Jung philosophy of determining a person’s traits and behavioral patterns, all without God of course.

The last one: Experiences. Warren says

God sovereignly determined your shape for his purpose, so you shouldn’t resent it or reject it.

That seems fine on paper, but in reality, who we are NOW and what we want NOW determines our Rick Warren SHAPE. According to Warren’s criteria, God has nothing to do with it — we just follow the procedures. If you tell your pastor or church friends that God has given you particular gifts, but those gifts are not apparent to them, they will look at you as if you’ve lost your marbles. “But what about the SHAPE process? And the interview with the ministry leader? It is extremely imperative that you go through the proper channels!”

To those who are reading this, you must be obedient to GOD, not to man. Follow scripture, not Rick Warren’s opinion. But if you are a Warren wannabe, then follow the prescribed man-made path — a form of godliness but denying the power of God.
